Can I Get A Oregon Trip Permit If My Cars Registered In Different States

Trip permits allow you to temporarily use:

  • An unregistered vehicle on Oregon roads.
  • A registered vehicle differently than the electric current registration allows.

Buy a Trip Permit

Attending: Trip permits are not-refundable.

You tin can buy a trip permit:

To apply, you must provide:

  • Your name and address;
  • Your driver license or ID bill of fare number and the state it was issued by;
  • The twelvemonth, make, and model of the vehicle;
  • The vehicle identification number;
    • If Oregon DMV has no record of the vehicle, provide a copy of your insurance card or policy, registration card, sales contract, or a pencil tracing of the vehicle identification number;

Types of Trip Permits

​You can drive in Oregon using your valid trip permit from some other state. Yous must keep proof of insurance in the vehicle.

Allows the use of unregistered:

  • Passenger vehicles (10,000 pounds or less combined weight, ORS 801.199);
  • Low-cal trailers and special employ trailers (8,000 pounds or less loaded weight, ORS 801.330​);

  • Medium-speed electrical vehicles;
  • Mopeds; or
  • Motorcycles.

Requirement:

  • $33 fee for 21 consecutive days.

You can only buy two permits for the aforementioned vehicle in a 12-month flow.

Allows the use of unregistered:

  • Campers;
  • Travel trailers; or
  • Motor homes.

Requirements:

  • $33 fee for 1 to 10 days;
  • Verify the RV is no more 45 feet long; and
  • Proof you ain the vehicle, if you are not the owner on Oregon DMV records.

Weight-Mile Taxation and Over-Dimension Permits

Vehicles with a combined weight over 26,000 pounds may exist subject to weight-mile tax. Vehicles with a combined weight over 80,000 pounds require an over-dimension permit.​

Allows the use of unregistered:

  • Trailers with a loaded weight (ORS 801.330) over 8,000 pounds;
  • Fixed load trailers; or
  • Special apply trailers.

Requirements:

  • $10 fee for 10 consecutive days; and
  • Loaded weight (ORS 801.330)

​Allows the utilize of Oregon-registered vehicles at a higher weight than the current registration allows.

These trip permits are often used for a registered rider vehicle to:

  • Pull a heavy trailer (not including travel trailers, fixed loads, or special use trailers) weighing over 8,000 pounds; or
  • Operate at a registration weight (ORS 801.420) over 10,000 pounds.

This permit cannot be used on for-hire vehicles.
